Rep Fitness PR-4000 Power Rack Review

This is my review of the Rep Fitness PR-4000 Power Rack with attachments. When I look at reviews of anything that costs upward of $1,000, I personally want to know exactly what I am getting. I also like to see a lot of pictures and videos of the items. So this review will be chock full of high resolution pictures of the PR-4000. Multiple pictures available at the bottom of this review. Video review will also be linked below to my YouTube page. You can purchase the PR-4000 here.

When the COVID-19 shutdown happened in March 2020, I was seriously upset because of the gyms being shut down. I’ve been working out in a commercial gym for nearly 10 years straight, without fail. I can count on one hand how many weeks I’ve taken off in the last 10 years. I’m obsessive about it. It’s my personality. With that being said, I knew I wanted to continue my workouts during the shutdowns, unfortunately, I was late to the game when trying to order gym equipment. Everything was sold out. I placed a pre-order for the Rep-Fitness PR-4000 on April 2, 2020. It arrived on June 10, 2020. I knew when I placed the order what the wait time would be and it was because of the rush on gym equipment caused by the pandemic. Was it worth the wait? Let’s find out…

First off, let me tell you what led me to choose the PR-4000 over the other options out there? It came down to price and quality of the equipment. I couldn’t find a lot of reviews on the PR-4000 but Rep had a good reputation on the PR-5000v2 and their other equipment. I would have loved to have a Rogue Power Rack but a comparable rack to the PR-4000 with the same accessories would have cost me quite a bit more money. And starting a home gym, I wanted to save where I could since I also needed to buy weight plates, bench and a barbell. Looking at the Titan Fitness X3 and reading reviews, it wasn’t quite up to the quality that I was looking for so I ended up deciding on a Rep Fitness Power Rack. Knowing I was going with Rep Fitness, I had to decide between the PR-4000 vs PR-5000. I decided the PR-4000 was just the right fit because it is made with the same 3x3 11 gauge steel tubing as the PR-5000. It has the same weight capacity at 1000 pounds. The PR-4000 has Westside hole spacing in the bench area where the PR-5000 does not. The PR-4000 has 5/8” bolts and hardware compared the the PR-5000 has 1” hardware. The smaller hole size/hardware was not an issue for me. The PR-5000 has a few more color options but again, not an issue for me. The PR-4000 and PR-5000 have similar accessory options as well.

I chose the metallic black 93” uprights and hammertone blue 30” crossmembers. You can choose a shorter version at 80” if you have limited height to work with. You can also choose three different depths from 24”, 30” and 41”. Those are inside depth measurements. I chose to go with the 30” depth because I felt that the 24” would be much too narrow for squatting. 41” would take up too much space for me because I wanted to add weight storage at a later date as well as the front spotter arms and front extension feet. Now that I have the 30” set up, I know that it is the right choice for my space.

The PR-4000 was delivered via a freight company with a liftgate truck. Everything came nicely packaged in cardboard boxes and each piece wrapped securely in foam to prevent damage. Set up and assembly was fairly straightforward, even though there were no assembly instructions. One tip on assembly, do not tighten down the bolts until you have it all all assembled. I ended up tightening everything down and had to loosen the bolts to get it squared up. The bottom was more narrow than the top by 2” because I prematurely tightened everything as I went. The PR-4000 comes with concrete anchors and is recommended that you mount it to the floor or platform. I built a platform based on these plans and I used 1/2” x 2” lag bolts to bolt it to the platform. This made everything very stable. Before bolting it down, the rack was a little wobbly and if I used the dip attachment, you could see the feet on the opposite side lift off the floor a little. Now that it is attached to the platform it’s stable.

Cost:

The base price for the PR-4000 as of this writing is $661. Of course adding different size cross members, accessories, etc will drive up the price. I spent $1,176.01 including shipping. See the image below for the pricing breakdown on the rack, accessories, and shipping for my order. Shipping from Colorado to Arkansas was $165.01. For freight shipping, I thought that was a decent price for the size and weight of the entire rack.

Rack Construction and Build Quality:

The welds on the PR-4000 and all accessories look great and have a high quality feel to them. They are all even and smooth. The holes are all laser cut and line up perfectly. All of the hardware feels substantial and sturdy. The metallic black powder coat looks awesome and I love the contrast of the hammertone blue color of the crossmembers which really goes great with my home gym theme. Everything bolted together easily and lined up without issues. I love the fact that I could customize my rack the way I wanted it with the colors and size options.

I ordered my rack with the PR-4000 dip attachment, landmine attachment, flat sandwich J-cups, safety straps, band pegs, and MultGrip pull up bar which added to the cost. One thing I wish Rep would do is allow me not to get the Logo Plate crossmember for $59. The good thing is that the REP tag is bolted on and can be removed. I ended up ordering the flip down safeties separately because I was unsure of the strap safeties and if I would like them or not. I also got an additional pair of regular J-cups after contacting Rep on the flip down safeties because they were originally mis-labeled on their website showing they had holes in them like those on the PR-5000. But as you can see in the images here, the flip down safeties are solid with no accessory holes available.

Accessories I got with the rack:

Standard J-Cups are lined with UHMW plastic to protect your barbell from damage. The J-Cups also have UHMW plastic lined to protect the rack from scuffs and scrapes. A very nice feature!

Standard J-Cup

Standard J-Cup

Sandwich J-Cups have a solid block of UHMW sandwiched between the metal that protects the barbell from damage and they are also lined to protect the rack. Both are equally solid when racking the bar and I have no complaints with either of them. The Sandwich J-cups are an upcharge of $59 whereas the standard J-Cups are included. If you upgrade from the standard J-cups, you only get the upgraded ones, not both. There is also an option to get round sandwich J-cups for $99.

Strap Safeties: The rack comes with pin pipe safeties unless you upgrade to a different style. I upgraded to the strap safeties. I was so unsure of the strap safeties before the rack was delivered that I ended up ordering flip down safeties just in case. While I do like having both types of safeties available, I know now I would have done just fine with the strap safeties. They are easily adjustable, very strong and well made. I like that I can quickly unhook one side and leave the other side attached when I need the rack open all the way to the bottom. I also like that I can set each end of the strap at different levels so the barbell is forced away from me if need be. The stitching is great on these straps and overall they feel like they are high quality.

Flip Down Safeties are a great option to have on the rack because you can easily line them up and they are quickly adjusted. I like having them available for rack pulls and presses. They are solid as a rock and have UHMW lining on top to prevent damage to the barbell. I like leaving them low on the rack to use as step ups to reach the pull up bar.

PR-4000 Dip Attachment

PR-4000 Dip Attachment

Dip Attachment for the PR-4000 is a beast! I love that the handles are more narrow the closer you get to the rack which allows different dip angles. Once on the rack it is very solid with very little movement. It is powder coated black and has a nice feel to it when doing dips. The dip attachment is easily removed and installed and has a safety pin to securely attach it to the rack. It is a much bigger attachment than I was expecting. It can be installed facing the front, back or side of the rack so it is very versatile. The dip attachment comes in three pieces that you bolt together with the same size bolts that are used on the rack so the wrenches fit, which is a great bonus. The ends of the dip bars are capped by plastic caps. Let’s hope those don’t pop out and I lose them.

Landmine Attachment easily attaches to the rack with the supplied pin at any point you wish, although most attach it closest to the floor like I did. It is perfect for rows, presses, curls, and many other exercises. It rotates so smooth. It has the same powder coat finish as the dip attachment.

The MultiGrip Pull Up Bar is so awesome. I am very happy I decided to get this pull up bar versus the other options. The pull up bar adds to the height of the rack, if installed upright. You can also install upside down if height is an issue. This pull up bar gives you multiple hand angles as well as a fat and skinny pull up bar. The build quality of the bar is very good. The welds are smooth and even. The powder coat is the same as on the landmine and dip attachments. It’s not a slick finish, but not rough either. It feels a lot like a smooth cast iron plate. For just an $89 add on, I would highly recommend this attachment. I thought about getting the side mount globe attachment as well.

Other available attachments available for the PR-4000 include: Lat/Low row attachment, leg roller attachment, front foot stabilizer, spotter arms, weight horns, globe front mount pull up as well as a side mount, standard 1.25” pull up bar and 2” pull up bar. Rep Fitness has planned to release a belt squat and ISO arms. I have full intentions on adding the ISO arms, front stabilizers, and spotter arms to my rack soon.

I’ve used commercial gym racks for the last 10 years. This PR-4000 is the nicest rack I’ve used. The stability of the rack, the wide range attachments available for the rack and the fact that all the attachments have UHMW plastic to protect both the rack and your barbells is great. On top of all of that, Rep has some of the best prices on equipment like this. It’s hard to beat the price and quality you get. I am very pleased with my purchase of the PR-4000 and believe it will last me many years to come. I have completely stopped my commercial gym membership and have gone 100% home gym. I’m all in. Keep an eye out for many more reviews. Comment below anything you would like to know about this rack or products you would like me to review in the future.

What I don’t like about the rack. Honestly there’s not a lot. I would like it if Rep offered black bolts instead of the silver ones. I really would like the flip down safeties to have attachment holes like those on the PR-5000v2, if for nothing other than aesthetics. I would like it if every hole was numbered, but to get that you have to step up to the PR-5000. Also on the sides of the uprights, it would be nice if it had matching holes all the way up like the front and back are so you could have more options of where to put your attachments. If the multi grip pull up bar had knurling, that would be nice. Those are all minor wants really. All in all I am very happy with this power rack!
